¹ note - though part of the 32nd BCF (British Chess Federation) Congress, the above tournament was not for the British Championship, which had been postponed until the autumn – it was scheduled to start at the National Chess Centre in London on Monday 6 November, with possible entries including Australians CJS Purdy and G Koshnitsky. However, it was not ultimately played because of the outbreak of war. William Winter was due to play at Bournemouth but "did not put in an appearance" (BCM, September 1939, p399) and was replaced by PN Wallis.
² Adrián García Conde: I have changed the PGN file and the crosstable to reflect the correct presentation of his name to accord with the Hispanic standard – [forename] [paternal surname] [maternal surname]. Note that many contemporary English language references to this player gave his name as 'A. G. Conde' but that is not standard Hispanic usage.

[BCM, October 1939, p428] "What might have been an exciting finish to the tournament was ruined by the world catastrophe. A good fight had been anticipated between Landau and Euwe; but, like the remaining Dutch players at the Congress, they had both left for Holland. It is understood that they had played a game on the previous evening, ending in a draw, but the public saw nothing of this. Euwe’s score thus became 9; and Flohr, with 8, had a chance of tying with him if he could beat König. But König was a possible sharer in the fourth prize, and had no intention of letting Flohr win easily. As a matter of fact, there was a draw in 60 moves, during which both players had difficulties with their clocks. Klein finished strongly, beating Kitto in 26 moves only, and so making his score equal to Flohr’s. Conde, who might have taken fourth prize by winning his last game, played disappointingly and was thus placed below both König and Landau."

[BCM, October 1939, p426] "The result of this event might almost be called “prodigious,” for the title fell—needless to say for the first time—to a child of thirteen, who went through the tournament without a loss, and with only two drawn games. Miss Elaine Saunders throughout the fortnight kept her head, and this, apart from her great natural talent and excellent tuition, is the secret of her success. She had lost games against Miss Musgrave, last year’s champion, and Miss M. E. Lander, but she drew the first and won the second, by which she assured herself of first place before the final round was played."

[BCM, October 1939, p429] "Section A of the Major Open Tournament was spoilt by the shadow of war. Podhorzer was perhaps a certain winner early in the fray, but the veteran Speijer, who was favourite for second place, left for Holland a day in advance of his compatriots and forfeited two points, letting in Znosko-Borovsky as second. He nevertheless succeeded in sharing the third prize with Fazekas and Sämisch. Section B of the Major was a much weaker event, and the only misfortune here was the withdrawal of one of the competitors without playing a game, so that there was a bye each round. It is notable that Hoad, who won first prize, entered originally for the First Class, and was only a late promotion to the Major Open."

There was of course no BCF Congress in 1940. The venue would have been Sutton Coldfield, as decided at BCF meetings in 1939.
