JUNIOR INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT AT BIRMINGHAM

This novel tournament, arranged by the Birmingham and District Junior League with the support of the Municipality, reflects the greatest credit on all concerned.

An extraordinary amount of difficulties had to be surmounted, chief among them, travel restrictions for, in this "age of progress" civilization has decreed that one of the first rights of man—free individual intercourse between nations—depends on official decisions as to who may go out and who may come in.

In this case two Czechoslovakian representatives were unable to appear and one Yugoslav was absent through illness.

In the end only three players from abroad took part, instead of six. T. R. D. Grove and R. W. Thomas were put in as reserves and justified their inclusion, Thomas winning in first-class style against our boy champion. We give the game below.

H. Bouwmeester, who shared first prize with Harris, has a great reputation in Holland and a match between him and Dr. Euwe is being arranged, presumably a practice match. The play of P. Harris made a great impression in Hastings where he was runner-up in the Boys' Championship last Easter.

[score of R W Thomas 1-0 D G Horseman]

Black lost through wasting so many moves in the opening to win a pawn. This was either faulty judgment or underestimating White's chances. White's finish was impeccable.
