[BCM, May 1966, p127] "The fourteenth Bognor Regis Congress was held at Butlin’s Holiday Camp from Aprii 13th to 23rd [166]. It was an occasion for records to be broken for this year there totalled in all 462 competitors, easily beating the previous best of 417 in 1964. A splendid total of 222 juniors competed in a congress already renowned for the way it encourages the participation of young players. Now re-named the Butlin Open Chess Championships, the Bognor Congress continues to go from strength to strength.

"For the first time the congress no longer incorporated the Southern Counties’ Championships but this in no way had an adverse effect on the numbers competing in the premier event, The Churchill Memorial Tournament (previously known as the Stevenson Memorial Tournament). Indeed, it attracted a mammoth entry of seventy-eight players.

"Mr. Norman Fishlock-Lomax again persuaded a powerful contingent of overseas players to test their skills against British players of all strengths. Of course, grandmaster Matanovic, of Yugoslavia, was the favourite to win the first prize, but he was bound to be run close by the international masters Ciocaltea (Roumania), Karaklaic (Yugoslavia), and Bouwmeester (Holland). The other foreign players (some of unknown strength) were: Andric (Yugoslavia), Thorbergsson (Iceland), Terbourbi (Tunisia), Krantz (West Germany), Dr. Divinsky (Canada), Gulbrandsen (Norway), van Camp (Belgium), and van Seelen (Denmark).

"A strong English entry included the current British Champion, Lee, two former Champions, Golombek and Wade, and the internationals Abrahams, Basman, N. Littlewood, and myself.

"Matanovic and Wade, who had been playing in tournaments at Le Havre, arrived at Bognor on the morning of Round 2. Fortunately for Matanovic this did not mean that he had to play two games in one day for his listed opponent Maric had failed to obtain a visa. So while Matanovic gained a gift point, Wade had to face Mazitis. The Champion of the Latvian players in Britain played soundly to hold the game to a draw.

"The defeat of Andric in the first round by T. Baldwin correctly indicated that the former would not recapture the form of last year, which had brought him joint third place.

"In Round 3 came the first shock of the tournament. The British Champion, P. N. Lee, just back from gaining a creditable third place behind del Corral and Medina in a tournament in Spain, was well beaten by J. N. Sugden, a Dulwich College schoolboy from Beckenham.

"Bouwmeester and N. Littlewood had a complex struggle featuring opposing pawn majorities that finally resolved in the favour of the Dutch player.

"Two other games of Round 3 were of significance. In the first, Karaklaic, by winning one of his almost classic Rook and pawn endings against Thorbergson, indicated that he had put his sad form of last year behind him. The other game suggested that Matanovic was not at his best, for he was never completely happy against M. J. Basman.

"At the end of Round 4 the leading scores were: Gulbrandsen and Karaklaic 4; Bouwmeester, Ciocaltea, and Matanovic 3½. Already the most fancied of the foreigners had begun to emphasize their superiority.

"In the next round, however, Ciocaltea received a serious defeat at the hands of Basman. That the Roumanian should have resigned when only one pawn down and with many pieces remaining on the board is a measure of the respect that Basman’s fine earlier play had gained him. It was not until the last round, when he won the most brilliant game of the tournament, that we were to see the real Ciocaltea.

"Peter Lee lost his second game to a schoolboy. Playing the Morra Gambit against the Sicilian Defence, sixteen-year-old T. W. Hart held the upper hand for almost the whole game, though one suspects that Lee could have avoided defeat had he not played too riskily shortly before the adjournment.

"An excellent encounter was that between R. A. Doney and N. Littlewood.

"The two big games of Round 6, Matanovic v. Karaklaic and Gulbrandsen v. Bouwmeester, were quickly agreed drawn. This gave Littlewood his opportunity to join Karaklaic and Gulbrandsen in the lead, with 5 points, by a comfortable win over Damant.

"In Round 7 Ciocaltea went badly astray in the opening against Karaklaic. With Matanovic, Gulbrandsen, and Bouwmeester being held to draws by Lee, Littlewood, and Basman respectively, Karaklaic thus assumed the sole lead.

"Round 8 signalled the end of Littlewood’s serious challenge for a high place when he lost a well contested game to Karaklaic.

"Bouwmeester and Matanovic tried hard against Karaklaic and Gulbrandsen respectively in important Round 9 games but in both cases solid defence earned draws for the players of the black pieces.

"Lee, at last beginning to find his true form, came into the picture by beating Basman. Wade beat L. de Veauce in nine moves.
Hart won splendidly against Abrahams—a game full of neat little tactical points.

"In Round 10 Hart almost ruined everything for Karaklaic. The sixteen-year-old achieved a clear initiative in the opening and early middle-game and Karaklaic had to call on all his defensive powers to escape with a draw.

"Gulbrandsen became joint leader as a result of a rather fortunate win against Alan K May, for the latter missed at least once clear win during a hectic time-scramble.

"Ciocaltea moved up into a leading position in almost an identical way for he was quite lost against L. Tate until the promising seventeen-year-old Northumberland player blundered away a piece just before the adjournment.

"Littlewood never looked like justifying his optimistic piece sacrifice against Matanovic.

"Leading scores with one round to go: Gulbrandsen and Karaklaic 8; Matanovic 7½; Ciocaltea, Bouwmeester, Basman, Hart, Whiteley, and Lee 7.

"After Ciocaltea had beaten Gulbrandsen by means of a sparkling sacrificial King’s-side attack (this game will appear in Mr. Golombek’s “Games Section”), Karaklaic was assured of first place if he could overcome Lee. Naturally this proved to be no easy task but the Yugoslav finally achieved the win in a well-fought game.

"Matanovic retained second place by winning comfortably against Hart. Thus Hart lost only his first and last games (the first, incidentally, to me just in case anyone was wondering whether I played in this tournament).

"With Hart, Lee, and Whiteley all losing, Basman became the leading English player by beating R. F. Harman."

[BCM, June 1966, p164] "We regret to report the tragic death of Dr. Jan Glaser, who was killed on April 22nd [1966] in a car accident on his return home from the Bognor Regis Congress. With him were his wife (also killed), his father (severely injured), and his two youngest children, who escaped with bruises. His eldest son Tony, who also competed at Bognor, travelled back by train the next day. Dr. Glaser, who was born in Czechoslovakia, escaped from his native country during World War II and after a thousand mile trip ended up serving with the British Forces in India. A strong player—Northumberland County Champion three years running, he was also active in organizing and carrying out the first Northumberland Congress at Gosforth last summer, and it was on his initiative that the recently established chess centre in Newcastle was formed." (The accident occurred just south of Scotch Corner near Richmond, North Yorkshire. The Glaser family's car struck a stationary lorry parked in a bad place, according to newspaper reports. They were headed home to Gosforth, Northumberland.)
