2nd LONDON CHESS CLUB INTERNATIONAL INVITATION TOURNAMENT [name of author not given - probably Leonard Barden]

September 13th - 15th, 1974

The main purpose of this tournament, organised by the London C.C. with the kind cooperation of the Slater Foundation and the Mary Ward Centre for Adult Education, was to enable promising juniors to have the benefit of play and analysis with internationals and masters. Therefore, the invited entrants were International and National Masters and leading juniors. Four juniors qualified from a 62-player Candidates’ Tournament the previous weekend. Most of England’s leading players took part including five of the seven who recently tied for the British Championship.

There were ten main prizes ranging from £150, £100, £80 down to £5 for the tenth place; there was also a best game prize for each round, as well as various Junior prizes. The tournament carried triple point status in the 1974 Cutty Sark £1000 Grand Prix.

The Tournament Director was Leonard Barden and the Controllers were P. Morrish and R. W. O'Brien. The conditions were: 5-round Swiss; 40 moves in 2 hours; games unfinished after 40 moves continued at a rate of 15 moves in 30 minutes, while games unfinished after 70 moves were adjudicated. There was no entry fee, but competitors living in the London area were asked to provide accommodation on the Friday and Saturday nights for at least one of the visiting players. This arrangement enabled the organisers to eliminate hotel expenses and thus increase the prize fund.

[Rd 1 - M Woodhams 0-1 J M Hodgson] Awarded the Round 1 Best-Game prize, this was really the game of the tournament. The 11-year-old London Primary Schools champion defeats the 26-year-old Australian who scored 15½ (out of 18) on Board 4 in the recent Nice Olympiad.

[Rd ? - Nunn 1-0 Hutchings] Awarded the Tournament Best-Game prize in view of Nunn's interesting plan of a Q-side pawn advance before the attractive combination attack against the black king.

[Rd 4 - J Littlewood 1-0 N Holloway] Awarded the Round 4 Best-Game prize.

The Second London Chess Club International Invitation Tournament 13-15 September 1974

Leonard Barden reports

This tournament was organised by the London Chess Club, with the co-operation of the Slater Foundation and the Mary Ward Centre to give promising juniors the benefit of play and analysis with internationals and masters. Invited entrants were international and national masters and leading juniors; four juniors qualified from a 62-player candidates tournament the previous weekend. Most of England’s leading players took part, including five of the seven who recently tied for the British Championship. There were ten main prizes ranging from £150, £100, £80 down to £5 for tenth place; there was also a best game prize for each round. David Sherman, three times Southern Counties champion, gave a tutorial commentary for spectators on major games as part of the concept of combining chess with adult education proposed by Mr. W. L. Kitney, Principal of the Mary Ward Centre. On September 26, the Mary Ward Centre begins a new chess evening class (6.15 on Thursdays) tutored by Graham Lee of the London Chess Club.

Simon Webb, 25, long-time leader but caught on the post in the British Championship, got consolation by beating two of
the players (Bellin and Stean) who tied for the title. 20 year old Feustel revealed unexpected strength and finished ahead of both England’s Junior World Champions. At 11, Julian Hodgson was the second youngest player to compete in an international against masters (Reshevsky, later a grand master, upstaged Julian at New York 1922).
