1985 NatWest Team Challenge, 11-20 August, Catford, London
BCM, October 1985, p447
NatWest Challenge — A tournament with this title was played at Catford, South London, to make use of the opportunity provided by the presence in England of a large group of players waiting to take part in the Lloyds Bank Masters. The organisers were Eric Schiller and Louise McDonald, the former also turning out for the USA. An Anglo-India side consisted of Ravikumar, Martin and Hawksworth!
The event was actually conducted as a Category 4 tournament in which the individual scores were: (1) Stuart Conquest 7/9 losing only to Ravikumar and achieving his second IM norm (stated as the winning of the IM title in The Times); (2) Darryl Johansen (AUS) 6½; (3-5) Ravikumar, Hawksworth, Kosten 5½; (6-8) Hall, Gallagher, Martin 4½; (9) West (AUS) 4; (10) Colias (USA) 3; (11) Levi (AUS) 1½; (12) Schiller (USA) 1/8 — deputed for in one game by Bob Wade, who drew with Hawksworth. [I've marked Hall in red because I think he scored 5/9, not 4½/9 as given in BCM. See table below - JS]
(1) England 17; (2) Anglo-India 15½; (3) Australia 12; (4) USA 9½.

28 February 2023 | File first uploaded with 54 games. My thanks to Paul Summers for sending the Australian team games which has given at least some idea of the dates and round numbers. The games have been available via the CB Mega/Big Database for some years but without aforementioned information. They would have been taken from Richard O'Brien's bulletin. If anyone has further information about the dates and round numbers, please let me know. |
