The Fifth NatWest Young Masters

The low-budget tournament arranged by the Kings Head club in Bayswater is an excellent example of giving norm chances to Britain’s budding players. This year, during a heat wave at the start of September, the enhanced opportunities were taken to the full. Michael Adams followed up his Lloyds Bank triumph by making a GM norm at the age of 16, while David Norwood, three years older, and on the eve of going to Oxford made the same norm with rather less effort, coasting home after an excellent start. He actually beat the three top-rated players in the event in the first three rounds: Kudrin, Rogers and Hodgson.

Mark Hebden was also in good form and looked to be on target for the GM norm, but found that the Finnish GM had reserved his best play for the last day and actually achieved mate in the last few seconds left on his clock.

The small playing room made it difficult to accommodate players at the Bayswater Inn hotel, and the window had to be opened on to the street to improve ventilation so that the playing conditions were hardly ideal, but the players took it in good part.
The potential spectators were normally to be found in a nearby lounge where skittles games and analysis could be indulged in to the heart’s content. Many GMs paid a visit!

The brilliancy prize went to Sergey Kudrin for his victory over Danny King. Julian Hodgson was adjudged to have played the best game against Tony Kosten. The adjudicator was Kings Head member Jon Speelman.

The prizes were £500, £400, £150 and £100. The tournament was controlled and directed by Bob Wade, Andrew Whiteley and Shaughan Feakes.
