From February 24-26, at Uppingham Community College, four grandmasters, one woman grandmaster and 22 International Masters were among the 450 participants in the BARNSDALE COUNTRY CLUB YOUNG MASTERS tournament.
That so many strong players are attracted to this event is a tribute to the excellent organisation of Peter Barton and his team. The atmosphere at the Young Masters, which gives the best young players in the country the opportunity to compete against established internationals, is always one of intense but friendly competition. The unusually competitive spirit was underlined in the final round, when every one of the top ten games produced a decisive result. The tournament was magnificently served by new sponsors Barnsdale Country Club, who provided over £2,500 in prizes, as well as the superb facilities of the Country Club itself for some of the participants.

16 September 2020 | First upload here. Some of these games appear on 2020 Big/Mega but without any dates or round numbers, and with some identification errors (e.g. Andrew Jones wrongly identified as Angus James). The partial crosstables from the 1989/90 Yearbook has enabled me to include most dates and round numbers. |
21 September 2020 | A few cosmetic and spelling amendments. |
20 April 2024 | Added the game J.Nicholson 1-0 Duncan R Woods (rd 3), contributed by John Nicholson, for which many thanks. |
