Drama and Democracy in Dublin Zonal
Murray Chandler and Bernard Cafferty report
“Everyone is a genius at least once a year, a real genius has his original ideas much closer together” - G. C. Lichtenberg (1742-1799)
The FIDE qualification tournament for Zone 1.1a (England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Guernsey), held in Dublin during April, featured a revolutionary concept. Anyone who could raise the fee (£100 if Elo-rated 2000-2100 or £150 for players below Elo 2000) could compete with the Grandmasters in this first rung of the next Championship cycle. This democratic innovation proved quite popular, but didn’t stop Michael Adams and Jon Speelman, the top seeds, from taking the qualification spots. Both went through undefeated, and have already done preparation together for the Swiss system Biel Interzonal this July. From Biel there are 10 places through to the knockout Candidates Matches, and with no Gary Kasparov at the end, super-GMs such as Speelman and Adams must be in with a real chance of going all the way.
With a mixture of strengths, ages and talents, Dublin produced a sparkling mixture of blunders and brilliancies. Britain’s first ever Grandmaster Tony Miles, at 38 a seasoned professional, set the tone for blunders in round one. His amateur opponent, Philip Rossiter from Portsmouth, turned up 40 minutes late – but didn’t look a gift-bishop in the mouth. In round eight it was Miles again on the receiving end, this time of an extraordinary and brilliant miniature by teenage prodigy Dharshan Kumaran. Of course Kumaran, a FIDE master, is a strong player in his own right, but his standard of play in the Miles game was exceptional. In club play ordinary players have often risen to the big occasion, and produced a glorious game. The difference, as the quotation above emphasises, is that talents like Mickey Adams or Jon Speelman can do it all the time.
In Dublin, Adams was undoubtedly the creative as well as the tournament champion. The two games annotated by Mickey here show how essential tactical ability is even for a noted positional player. Many top GMs now use PC programs like Fritz 2 or Chess Genius to sharpen their tactical skills between tournaments.
The annual Biel tournament can be highly recommended for a summer holiday, and will have numerous subsidiary tournaments running concurrently with the Interzonal.

12 October 2023 | A correction: Paul Roberts (SCO) did not play in this event - it was the Irish player Danny Roberts (national rating 2070). Also, note that I have discovered a forename for AF Wright - he is Andrew F Wright. I have added some national ratings for Irish players, found in the first round bulletin. |
