1st IM norm for Tim Wall

3rd Tyneside International 1995

by Tim Wall

In my third foray into organising international events this year, a ten player all-play-all was held at the Chillingham Arms in Newcastle, proving yet again to be an excellent venue.

Originally planned as a Scheveningen team event with 2 teams of 9 players, late withdrawals forced a change of format to a more conventional round robin tournament. This produced a very competitive event with all the usual "blunders and brilliancies", but with only 11 draws out of 45 games – almost unheard of in international chess!

The two other unusual features were a massive score by the White pieces, beating Black by a thunderous 31½ - 13½, and the surprising performance of a certain co-winner who finished last at the 2nd Tyneside International in September, but this time more happily scored an IM norm with 7/9!

I'd like to thank several people who made the tournament possible and helped everything run smoothly:

  • The arbiters, Stefan Hartmann and John Turnock, for their sterling efforts; Lara Barnes, Clive Waters, Simon Brophy, Mark Barfoot, Bob Forsythe and Jon Nelson for kindly providing places to stay for visiting players;
  • The British Chess Federation and in particular, International Director David Sedgwick, for their financial and moral support;
  • The Northumberland Chess Association, for the loan of boards, sets and clocks;
  • Paul Bielby and John Wall (thanks Dad!), for helping with the production of this bulletin;
  • The members of Bedlington Chess Club, who helped to ferry players to the tournament each day;
  • Chris Dunworth, for giving me the confidence to go ahead in the first place;

- AND-

  • John, Lesley and the staff at the "Chilli" for putting up with us during their busy, pre-Christmas rush!

As John pointed out at our closing ceremony, next year we should put on the World Championship so if you're reading this, Florencio and Garry, send your sealed bids to the usual address .... !

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the following games and look forward to seeing you soon in 1996!

Tim Wall, December 1995
