The Anglo-Dutch Match

Report by Harry Golombek

It was our turn to visit Holland this year, which we duly did at the last week-end of October. Our team was a good young side, missing only Penrose and Botterill of the leading players and looking on inspection quite healthy. This was also a good thing since it enabled me to preserve my role as non-playing captain, a thing I was not able to do on the previous visit. At least, all the men were well, but the night before she was due to travel Mrs. Hartston developed raging toothache. The rules do not specify whether I can take the place of a lady-player (obviously a subject for The F.I.D.E. Rules Commission) so I brought with me a collection of pain-killing tablets prescribed for me at various times and these must have been efficacious since Jana played and did well.

But I am anticipating. When we arrived at Flushing we discovered that the home team was much weaker than it usually is. Absentees were Donner, Ree, Timman, Zuidema, Langeweg and Enklaar. The reasons were various — Donner had fallen ill, Ree was in Turkey, Timman somewhere else (either Italy or Yugoslavia), Zuidema could not play on the Sabbath, Langeweg was playing in the Tschigorin Memorial Tournament in Russia and Enklaar was in France. The latter was expected almost up to the last moment and eventually replaced by the local hero G.Jansen, who, having beaten Basman on just such an occasion, thought he could take on Hartston.

My good friend Bouwmeester, captain of the Dutch side, after confiding in me that his boys were very undisciplined, promoted himself to top board where, at present, he has and had too many guns for our champion, Brian Eley. On fifth board Peter Markland came unstuck against Schell [sic] and lost in 28 moves, pointing out that the change in captaincy must have affected him since he had not lost at Skopje. On a similar tack, Keene, discovering to his horror that he had the same position against Hartoch that I had against him, Keene, at, I think, Glasgow, hurriedly agreed a draw. Stean also agreed an early draw but did not blame me. Whiteley drew a longer game with the veteran of the Dutch side Cortlever. The remaining games all went in our favour so we started off with a resounding win by 6½-3½.

[score tables]

This meant we won the whole match by 12½-7½. It is always pleasing to win and equally we have a very agreeable time when we visit or entertain our Dutch friends; but, with such a crowded schedule of international events, there may come a time when we will have to consider whether this match is worth playing if the Dutch do not field anything like a representative side. Perhaps this crushing defeat will put the Dutch on their metal [sic] and they will send to our shores next year a team that will be worthy of their national name.

Here are a few entertaining games from the encounter — at least, our players thought them entertaining. [Wade-Kuijpers, J Hartston-I Jansen, Hartoch-Keene]
