Round 7 - 30 September 2005

The two Alexanders: Shabalov vs Areshchenko
The two Alexanders: Shabalov vs Areshchenko

In the battle of the two leaders, Shabalov pressed hard against Areshchenko but the young Ukrainian defended actively, sacrificing the exchange to expose Shabalov's king and finally escaping with a draw. It was a game befitting the two most positive players in the event.

Shabalov,A (2593) - Areshchenko,A (2625)
Monarch Assurance Port Erin IOM (7.1), 30.09.2005

[Under heavy pressure, Black decided to seek active play by sacrificing the exchange...] 27...Rxc4! 28 Rxc4 Qa5 [Now, with not too much time left until the time control, it is difficult for White to stop Black's queen getting close to his king.] 29 d7 [Fritz suggests 29 Rxa7 but after 29...Qd5 White is hard put to avoid perpetual check.] 29...Qd2 30 d8Q [Probably best.] 30...Qxd8 31 Qxd8 Rxd8 32 Rxa7 Rd1+ 33 Kf2 Rd2+ 34 Kg3 Be6 35 Rca4 [The a2 pawn is White's only trump, but there is little prospect of it ever being properly supported by the rooks. White has to be realistic and concede the draw.] 35...Kg7 36 h4 Rd3+ 37 Kf2 Rd2+ 38 Kf3 Rd3+ 39 Kg2 Rd2+ 1/2-1/2

Leonid Kritz  Mikhail Kobalia

38...Rh8? [Black should avoid the exchange of rooks. The opposite bishop ending proves to be relatively easy for White to win.] 39 Rxh8 Kxh8 40 b4 axb4 41 axb4 Kg7 42 Kb3 Kf8 43 Kc4 Be3 44 Kb5! [There is no time to lose in getting the king up the board. 44 Kxc3? gives Black one more vital tempo to get his king across to the queenside.] 44...Ke7 45 Kc6 Kd8 [Sooner or later Black will have to give up the d6 pawn anyway. If 45...Bxg5 46 Kc7 Bf4 47 b5 Kf6 48 b6 Be3 49 b7 Ba7 50 b8Q Bxb8+ 51 Kxb8 Ke5 52 Bc4 Kd4 53 Kc7! Kc5 (53...Kxc4 54 Kxd6 f5 55 Kc6! wins) 54 Kd7 f5 55 Bd3 and White wins.] 46 Kxd6 Bxg5 47 Kc6 Bf4 48 d6 Be3 49 b5 Bd4 50 Bf5 Be3 51 b6 Bf2 52 Kb7 [52 b7? Ba7 and the win evaporates. But White can stop the bishop coming to a7 quite easily.] 52...Bc5 53 Bh3!

53...f6 [53...Bxd6 does not quite save Black: 54 Ka8 Ke7 55 b7 Kf6 56 b8Q Bxb8 57 Kxb8 Ke5 58 Kc7 f5 59 Kc6 f4 60 Bg2 Kd4 61 Kb5 Ke3 62 Kc4 wins.] 54 Kc6 Bf2 55 Bf5 [White gains time before the second time control.] 55...Be3 56 Kb7 Bc5 57 Bh3 Bd4 58 Ka6 Bc5 59 b7 Bxd6 60 Ka7 Ke7 61 b8Q Bxb8+ 62 Kxb8 Kd6 63 Kb7 Kc5 64 Ka6 1-0

Kritz,L (2544) - Ikonnikov,V (2560)
Monarch Assurance Port Erin IOM (7.4), 30.09.2005

[The position looks level, but White now engineers a dangerous break.] 27 d4!? exd4 28 Rd1 Rd8 29 Rad3 a5 30 Bxd4! Bxd4 31 Rxd4 Rxd4 32 Rxd4 axb4 33 e5! [One of the key differences in the position is the relative safety of the two kings. Black's king is vulnerable to a mating attack, while the worst the White king can fear is perpetual check. White plays to open the black king up still further.] 33...Qxc5 34 Qe4! Qxb6 [It is too late to turn back: 34...Qf8 35 e6 Re7 36 Qg6+ Rg7 37 Qd3! Re7 38 Rd8 Re8 39 Qg6+ wins.] 35 Qg6+ Rg7 36 Qe8+ Kh7 37 Qxh5+ Kg8 38 Qe8+ Kh7 39 Rd8! c5 [39...Qxd8 40 Qxd8 b3 41 Qd3+ Kh6 42 Qxb3 Bc8 is more resilient but White should still win.] 40 e6 Qxd8 41 Qxd8 Bc6 42 Qc8 Bd5 43 e7 Bf7 [43...Rxe7 44 Qf5+ picks off the loose bishop.] 44 e8Q Bxe8 45 Qxe8 c4 46 Qxb5 c3 47 Qxb4 Rc7 48 Qd6 [Either the rook or the advanced pawn must fall.] 1-0

Mikhail KlenburgBobras-Klenburg was very entertaining. Mikhail Klenburg is pictured left.

Monarch Assurance Port Erin IOM (7.17), 30.09.2005

20 Bd5? Qxd5! 21 exd5 Rxe1+ 22 Kh2 Rae8 [Black has just rook and bishop for the queen, but his active pieces are in stark contrast to White's passive trio.] 23 Rb1 c4!? 24 Qxc4 R8e5 25 Qa2? [Perhaps this is a 'flawed masterpiece'; Fritz cannot find a win after 25 f4! though there are various tries. But burying his queen in a corner of the queenside is tantamount to suicide.] 25...Bxd5 26 c4

[Now for a neat finish...] 26...Rh1+!! 27 Kg3 [27 Kxh1 Re1+ 28 Kh2 Be5+ 29 g3 Rh1#] 27...Rg5+ 28 Kf4 Bxg2 [An elegant forcing finish is 28...Re1 29 cxd5 Be5+ 30 Kf3 Rf5+ 31 Kg4 Re4+! 32 Kxf5 Rf4#] 29 Nc3 [29 Ke3 keeps the game going but of course Black must win easily now.] 29...Rxh3 0-1
