COACH EXCURSION
Today was the day for the coach party round the island, and thankfully the sun came out for us. A packed coach set off for Castletown, then onto Douglas for a panoramic view of the town, and a final stop at St Johns, the scene for the summer sitting of the world's oldest parliament in continuous existence, Tynwald. It makes BCM (at a mere 123 years old) look like a youngster, and was founded in 978 A.D. That's 1,025 years and counting. I took a group photo. Click on this link to have a look.
Sulskis beats Korneev to assume sole lead of the tournament on 5/6 ahead of 11 others on 4½. More details later... Playing on the bottom board in the Open today is a new (French) name - Jean Depin. He is standing in to give Hans de Lange a game while Alan Ormsby takes a half point bye. More significantly, Jean is our host here in the Ocean Castle Hotel. That's right, he's the hotel manager, no less, and a splendid fellow he is too. But this is not just a bit of fun as Jean is a real chess player who practises all the time with Fritz 8 and other software programs on his PC. It will be interesting to see how Jean gets on this afternoon. He has been telling us about his passion for the Scotch Gambit but unfortunately he's got Black today ... (later) good news! Jean got a draw. It was an up and down struggle, first he looked lost, then he looked won, and then it was a draw. Excellent news! We all know what it's like to be around a chess player who has just lost.
