Golod and Roiz, both of Israel, lead the tournament with 3½/4. A very good afternoon for people who enjoy a good cheapo - I know I do (except when I'm on the receiving end). There was a Poland-Israel mini-match on the top two boards, with Poland having White on both. Israel won 2-0 as Roiz beat overnight leader Bartel (who was a little over-optimistic and turned down a draw) and Krasenkow (who seemed to be getting enough compensation for his pawns) allowed a neat trick by Golod. Test yourself and see if you can find Black's 35th move without peeking. Difficult not to, I know, because Chess Theatre (the game viewer I use on this website) always shows you the final position. Prosviriakov was winning, three pawns up against Georgiev, but fell for a mate cheapo. Have a look at Allen-Taylor and see if you can find an improvement for Black on move 29 - clue: there is a stonker of a move that maybe only a computer could find. In fact, had the human player found it, maybe nobody would have believed he had not received electronic assistance. Abergel-Jackson comes to an abrupt and striking end. The round started at 1.30pm and after precisely 11 minutes, John Nicholson decided he had had enough of his game and resigned. Not quite as premature as his resignation in round one, but not far off. Alan Walton was grateful for the chance to get off the mark.
