SOME CHEERFUL FACES TO LOOK AT...
Some smiling faces: Jean Depin, Peter Purland, Stewart Haslinger, Jeff Horner
John Saunders reports: It struck me that I had featured rather a lot of rather grim-looking faces so far this week. This is perfectly understandable as I tend to take photos as the players sit down to play and professional chess is of course a serious business. Not many of us appear at our happiest as we sit down to start a day's work and pro players are no different. But today, just for a change, I've picked out a few smiling faces in case some non-chessplaying people (e.g. potential sponsors) look in here and think we chess people are an irredeemably serious lot.
Left to right we have Monsieur Jean Depin, manager of the Ocean Castle Hotel, local Port Erin Councillor and our tournament director. He is looking pleased because his plans to run the 2008 Isle of Man International Chess Congress are going well - and of course because he recently became a married man.
Next in the parade is our genial arbiter Peter Purland, a gentle giant of a man (actually, not so gentle if some of his rugby-playing/celebrating stories are to be believed).
Third in the line is 25-year-old Stewart Haslinger from Formby who can probably expect to see the magic letter 'g' against his name on the next rating list - he is the newest recruit to the ranks of English grandmasters after some excellent performances during the summer.
And finally 58-year-old Jeff Horner who, if he gets the right pairing in the last round (and maybe even if he doesn't) could be on course to gain the IM title here pretty well regardless of his results in his final two games. Stewart Reuben, who is watching us from afar, comments as follows: "I note that Jeff Horner will get his IM title on Sunday even if he loses in round 8 and loses round 9 against an opponent rated about 2366. If he plays anybody below that, he needs ½/2. If memory serves me correct, he has two norms and was rated over 2400 in the 1970s. At 58 he may be the oldest person anywhere ever to have gained an IM title by the standard norm system. Please offer him my congratulations. It has been a saga of over 30 years."
All subject to confirmation, of course. As someone who has been keying in British tournament games for some years now, I've always enjoyed playing through Jeff's games. He more or less stopped playing in major events for a number of years but has now made a return with a vengeance in the Isle of Man. His current rating of 2344 does not do him justice, as I'm sure some of his victims in this tournament will agree. Later note: the arbiters here think that Jeff needs ½/2 for his norm. He is playing Ellie Paehtz this afternoon. Should be a good game. Jeff was a teacher and retired during the summer: this is his first rated event since then. He tells me he scored his first IM norm at the 1981 Benedictine tournament in Manchester and his second norm at the 1983 British Championship in Southport. The ChessBase Player Encyclopaedia records his best rating as 2405 in January 1976.
LATEST NEWS... Jeff Horner has the half point he needs for his final IM norm. He drew in 15 moves against IM/WGM Elisabeth Paehtz - who wasn't even born when Jeff scored his first two norms!
I congratulated him in the analysis room a few minutes ago. I pointed out that he would still need to turn up tomorrow and so would his opponent. But, if need be, I'll act as stand-in myself... more games to go up in a few minutes.
Ukrainian GM Alexander Moiseenko dished out some severe treatment to Mark Hebden. Not easy to figure out where Hebden went wrong. Maybe he should not have given up the exchange for the pawns. I liked the quietly efficient way in which Mark Ferguson went about beating Masha Klinova. Mark doesn't draw attention to himself (in some ways he reminds me of Mickey Adams) but he is a fine player. Efimenko, Golod and Bartel are the winners on the top table, so join Yakovich in the lead.
