Top boards in round 9 - Yakovich (white) v Efimenko and beyond them Golod (white) v Bartel
Top boards in round 9 - Yakovich (white) v Efimenko and beyond them Golod (white) v Bartel

John Saunders reports: Oh dear - rather disappointing... both the top two boards ended in draws so we start with four players in the top score group. Finally six tied for first after Kobalia won, rather nicely, against Malakhatko, and Roiz beat Drozdovskij. The top board game Yakovich-Efimenko was agreed drawn in 12 moves (boo!). Golod and Bartel tried a bit harder but they too decided to down tools after 31 moves. Kevin Spraggett pulled off a very nice win this afternoon, also Mikhail Gurevich, who beat Peter Wells - both contenders for the £500 best game prize. Vitaly Kunin has had a generally good tournament but he miscalculated badly against Vladimir Georgiev today. His queen sacrifice might have worked but for an inconvenient 25 c4 move which turned the tables. Norman Hutchinson produced a bright finish which will no doubt send him home with a spring in his step. Other than this and Jon Speelman's win against Klinova, there was a major wipe-out of English players in the final round. Chess in Britain is getting more and more like Wimbledon. Joe Bradford played well to win against Mark Hebden - never an easy man to beat.

Aussie IM David Smerdon told his compatriot Manuel Weeks the other day that I didn't look the way he imagined a chess magazine editor would look. This did make me wonder just what he expected a chess magazine editor to look like but I decided against asking him since the answer might prove to be a fatal blow to my ego. Just in case you were wondering yourselves, here's a picture of me at my laptop at the Ocean Castle Hotel. I have the computer set up in my hotel room on the first floor, so it means running up and downstairs a good few times during every round to collect score sheets to key in. Good exercise: for the past three years my room was on the third floor and I used to cheat and use the lift a lot of the time, but I can still manage one flight of stairs at my advanced age (note to non-British readers: what we call 'the first floor' is what many of you call 'the second floor' and our 'ground floor' is your 'first floor')

While on the subject of David Smerdon and Manuel Weeks, here's a picture of them too, along with the young Aussie talent Moulthun Ly, a very promising 16-year-old player who is putting together a respectable performance here in the Isle of Man.

IM David Smerdon has recently chalked up his final GM norm and now just needs the rating. He's unlikely to make it here but it won't be too far away. Manuel and I worked together at the 2006 Gibtelecom Masters and will be doing so again at the 2008 Gibtelecom Masters (check out our state of the art website). As part of Gibraltar coverage, we are planning to provide videos of player interviews and post-game presentations and have been warming up with an interview of David Smerdon here in the Isle of Man (me working the camera and Manuel asking the questions). We have also got some nice footage from the Britain vs China match in Liverpool and the Staunton Memorial tournament in London. All good stuff, but I haven't quite mastered the editing side of the work yet and can't show you the fruits of our labours online as yet. The last time I tried, the video editing process tried to grab about half the space on my laptop's hard disk and brought the whole thing grinding to a halt. So we've got some decent footage with nowhere to go. Any ideas or advice from expert video editors gratefully accepted...
