Seven of the eight leaders at the board: left to right: Yakovich, Roiz, Golod, Efimenko,
Kuzubov, Drozdovskij, Kotronias. Bartel is the missing one.
Yuri Yakovich leads after six rounds
The finish to Roiz-Yakovich was very dramatic. In furious time pressure, Roiz was on the point of winning (though Yakovich missed some drawing chances) but lost on time with a move to play at the second time control. That means that Yuri Yakovich is the sole leader: somewhat fortuitously, but they all count. Kotronias tried to beat Drozdovskij but the defence held. Quickish draw between Bartel and Kuzubov, followed at some distance by Efimenko-Golod (which had its moments). Malakhatko-Speelman finished with a pulsating pawn race followed by mate but perhaps the English grandmaster could have done better. Peter Wells played a tactic which was reminiscent of the one that both Hebden and Kotronias overlooked in round two. Sam Collins played what looked like a pretty combination to dig himself out of trouble against Areshchenko but he then spoilt it with a blunder. Abergel-Hebden was a sprightly draw. Good result for Peter Taylor who beat a much higher rated player. Also for Scottish player Alan Tate, whose game was an example of how a lower-rated player should set about a higher-rated one - a real 'Chess for Tigers' job, that one. Phillips-Majer was a tragedy for White: in an overwhelming position he captured a piece with rook rather than queen - and it cost him his queen. Time trouble, of course.

The Coach Trip, 27 September 2007
As always at the tournament, the organisers very kindly lay on a coach trip on Thursday morning, to see some of the sights of the island. This year we went to Tynwald Hill, where the Manx national day is celebrated on July 5. Above, you can see the coach party posing for my camera on the hill where the Manx parliament congregates every year as part of the island's legislative process. If you run your mouse over the faces of people in the photo, you should see the identities of most of the people in it (apologies to the gentleman I have not identified and anyone I have misidentified - I will update in due course).
